What do you hope to do in the role?

“I hope to bring a new voice to the role and hopefully to help others further their passion for journalism and hopefully spread the word about journalism, especially in high school, so that more people can get involved.”

What excites you about journalism?

“Telling the unique stories in our communities, especially the ones that are considered everyday people. Everyone has their own background and story to tell, so I think it’s unique to explore that.”

VP of Broadcast/Podcast

Eden Richman ’23, Riverside High School

Reach out: edenmrichman@gmail.com

What do you hope to do in the role?

“I really hope that I can make this camp look more diverse like the newsrooms across our state, I would love to get more groups, especially others at my school, involved.”

What excites you about journalism?

“I love that journalism is an intersection of my favorite things, writing, hearing stories, and standing up for my community, whether that is the school community or The North Carolina community. Journalism in public schools is really important because if we don’t stand up for ourselves no one else is going to because we are minors and do not have the agency to make changes like adults do, so the ability to bring issues to light is very important to me.”

“I am excited to organize the Institute for next year and to meet new people and create bonds with the other officers.”

What excites you about journalism?

“I’m a very nosy person, so I like getting information. I am also creative, so I love creating things like the yearbook, broadcasts, and other things.”

Annalyse Powell ’23, Carmel Christian School

Reach out: 2023annalysep@carmelchristian.org

What do you hope to do in the role?

“What I hope to do in the role is just bring a new perspective to journalism through yearbook. I’ve been very thankful and grateful to have been in a position for a couple years now to work as a copy editor and just through the craft. I’m excited to take it to the next level and achieve new heights within it.”

What excites you about journalism?

“What excites me about journalism is there’s just no bounds to it. You can find anything and it will always be classified within the realm of journalism. You get to know people and just who they truly are, you get to know things about topics, and I love exploring all the different possibilities.”

VP of News

Foster Guns ’24, First Flight High School

Reach out: 24gunsfo54@daretolearn.org

What do you hope to do in the role?

“I hope to remind students why journalism, specifically news, is so important and how much fun it can be. I want to do something that will teach students but also is super interesting and different. I hope newcomers will be excited to learn, and returners will be reinvigorated and reminded why they love journalism.”

What excites you about journalism?

“Journalism excites me because all you really need is an open mind and a willingness to go out and get a story. It allows you to think freely and put your own ideas and interests into something other people can read and enjoy.”
